He was also a board member and investor at six different companies in four states.
On January 25, 2023, around 6:30 p.m., he jumped to his death from Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York on West 45th Street near Seventh Avenue. The death, which is being looked into as a possible suicide, happened just one day after he asked his wife Lauren Cheney for a divorce.

Sources in law enforcement told the Post that police were called to his old home on the Upper East Side twice in 2008 because he and his wife were fighting.

Thursday, a reporter from The Post visited his posh address. They found sports equipment all over the place and a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the driveway. The death of Cheney is being looked into as a possible suicide. The reporter knocked on the door, but an unidentified woman told him that 44-year-old Lauren was not there. Police say that the couple has three children who are in their late teens and early 20s.

Chris Piralta, 31, who was working across the street at the time, told The Post on Thursday, “It was like a little bump, like boom.” Nino Rodriguez, who works at the parking lot, said he heard a “big crack.” “Everyone was scared. Someone came through here and told me that someone had jumped. He said, “She had big eyes…” “It’s a mess,” he said. “That’s too bad,” said a hotel worker, who then declined to say anything else.
The general manager of the Hyatt Centric Times Square, Tom Blundell, said in a statement, “We are truly heartbroken by what happened this evening outside our rooftop bar. The victim’s family and friends are in our thoughts and hearts.”
