After having a hard time his freshman year because of stress fractures in his back, Nola played varsity baseball for three years at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He made it to two state playoffs during that time. At the end of his senior year in 2011, Nola was named “Mr. Baseball” by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

He was picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, but he went to college instead. He went to Louisiana State University (LSU), where he lived with Alex Bregman, who is now an MLB infielder. In 2014, he won the National Pitcher of the Year Award. He also played summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League while he was in college.
