Deshaun Watson was born Derrick Deshaun Watson on September 14, 1995, in Gainesville, Georgia. He is Don Richardson and Deann Watson’s child. Deshaun played football at Gainesville High School, where he was the first freshman to start as quarterback for head coach Bruce Miller. When he played for Gainesville High, he set several state records, such as for total touchdowns (218), total yards (17,134), and career passing yards (13,077). During his junior year, his team won the state championship, and Watson was named a Junior All-American, as well as a 2014 Top 100 Recruit and Player to Watch. Deshaun chose Clemson University in February 2012 after getting many scholarship offers. In 2014, Watson was named the number one quarterback recruit by the “ESPN 300.”

Deshaun is a Christian. In 2017, he talked to “The Clemson Insider” about how he decided which college scholarship to accept. He said, “I found Christ when I was in ninth grade, and I just started praying about my decision.” He also talked about the day he called Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and told him he wanted to be the team’s quarterback. “I just felt like that day I committed to Clemson, God was talking to me, and I just felt like the time was right and that’s what I wanted to do,” he said. Watson became a Southern Baptist after he moved to Houston. Through his charity, Homes for the Holidays, Atlanta Falcons player Warrick Dunn gave a house to the Watson family in 2006. (with help from Habitat for Humanity). In 2017, Deshaun gave the first check he got as an NFL player to three people who worked in the cafeteria at NRG Stadium. The check was for $27,000.
