She often went to New York to record with the group. During one of these trips, she met composer and producer Burt Bacharach. He asked her to sing on some demos he was recording with lyricist Hal David. Her singing got the attention of a Scepter Records executive, who quickly signed Warrick to the label. Bacharach and David wrote and produced her first single, “I Smiled Yesterday,” which came out in 1962. The B side, “Don’t Make Me Over,” was a bigger hit. On the record, Warrick’s last name was misspelled as “Warwick,” so she changed her name to that.

Warwick kept making records all the way through the 21st century. Her albums include the gospel album Why We Sing (2008) and two collections of duets, My Friends & Me (2006) and Feels So Good (2014). On My Friends & Me, she sang her old hits with artists like Cyndi Lauper and Reba McEntire.
