Draft and minor leagues (2011-2016)

In the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, Snell was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round.
Snell began 2014 with the Bowling Green Hot Rods. In May, he was moved up to the Charlotte Stone Crabs. On August 2, he was pitching a no-hitter against the Daytona Cubs when it started to rain.
It was the first time the Stone Crabs had a perfect game. Between the two teams, he started 24 games and went 8–8 with a 3.19 earned run average (ERA).

Eventually, he was moved up to the Durham Bulls. Between the three teams, he played 25 games (23 starts) and was 15–4 with an ERA of 1.41 and a WHIP of 1.02. After the season, the Rays added him to their 40-man roster. The 2016 season began with Snell playing for Durham.

Tampa Bay Rays (2016–2020)

Snell was moved up to the major leagues, and on April 23, 2016, he made his debut at Yankee Stadium.
His first inning was shaky because he gave up a run on a wild pitch, but he settled down after that. In the second inning, he struck out the side, and in the last 14 batters he faced, he got 12 of them out. During the 2016 season, Snell made 19 starts for the Tampa Bay Rays. He finished with a 6–8 record, a 3.54 earned run average, and 98 strikeouts in 89 innings.

In 2017, he made eight starts and had an ERA of 4.71. On May 13, he was sent to Durham. On June 28, Snell was called back, and it was clear that he had changed.

At the start of the 2018 season, Snell was the second starter, after Chris Archer. On November 14, Snell won the Cy Young Award from the American League. Snell signed a $50 million, five-year deal with the Rays on March 21, 2019. This will keep him with the team through the 2023 season.

San Diego Padres (2021–present)

On December 29, 2020, the Rays sent Snell to the San Diego Padres in exchange for prospects Luis Patio, Blake Hunt, and Cole Wilcox, along with catcher Francisco Meja.

The lockout stopped Snell from getting ready for the 2022 season, so he started spring training behind the other starting pitchers in terms of building innings.
