Eller Battled With Cocaine In His Last Years In The League

Eller battled cocaine for six of his 16 years in the league. He filed for bankruptcy a year after retiring due to poor investments.

Eller, who had three children with his first wife and recently remarried, said those years were “really damaging” to him and his family.

Eller sought treatment and talked about his issues. He assisted with league substance abuse policies. He created career initiatives for former athletes. Eller led an outpatient rehab program for thousands of addicts in the 1980s and 1990s.
