David Foster is a Canadian musician, composer, arranger, record producer, and music executive who was born on November 1, 1949. From 2012 to 2016, he was the chair of Verve Records. His music career has been going on for more than 50 years. He started out as a keyboardist for the pop band Skylark in the early 1970s. David Foster has won more awards than nearly any other living musician. In his nearly six decades at the forefront of the music industry, the Canadian musician has made a huge impact. American singer-songwriter and actress Katharine Hope McPhee was born on March 25, 1984. In May of 2006, she became well-known as the runner-up on American Idol Season 5. In 2007, her self-titled debut album was released by RCA Records. It quickly became a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 with initial sales of 381,000 copies.

McPhee has also established himself as an actor, having starred in films including The House Bunny and Shark Night 3D. She was one of Smash’s main protagonists, Karen Cartwright. She played the role of Paige Dineen in the CBS show Scorpion from 2014 to 2018. She played the lead role of Jenna in the Broadway and London West End productions of Waitress in 2019 and reprised the role in 2020.

Inside Foster And McPhee’s Relationship

Foster and McPhee met up for the first time in 2006 when McPhee was a contestant on American Idol and Foster was a guest mentor on the show. They became friends, and in 2008, Foster was a guest at McPhee’s wedding to actor and producer Nick Cokas at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. He accompanied McPhee on the piano while she sang “Unforgettable” by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole; their relationship was platonic up until 2017 when suspicions began to circulate about a romantic turn.

McPhee and Cokas divorced in 2016. Foster and Yolanda Hadid filed for divorce in 2017. Foster and McPhee’s public appearances together that year, particularly at the Grammy Museum’s third annual gala, fueled speculation that they were dating eachother. A source denied to PEOPLE that the two were dating, but a year later they were married.

Since resuming his role as a father (he already has five kids from prior partnerships), Grammy-winning producer David has said, “it’s just amazing being a dad,” while McPhee has called motherhood the “best job” she will ever have. They had their first child, a son named Rennie David Foster, in February of 2021. According to a representative for McPhee, who spoke with PEOPLE, “Mom, Dad, and son are all doing great” after the birth of their son.

McPhee admitted on Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast that she was nervous about dating Foster at first because of the way their 35-year age difference would be perceived by the general public, but that it was never an issue for her. It’s in everyone’s nature to “put a label on it” and judge something based on first impressions, she said. Thus, “I totally get the judgment at first, but things are never as they appear, things are never precisely as they appear, and I’m in love with our love story and that’s all that matters.”
