On Thursday, Mexican police caught drug cartel leader Ovidio Guzman, who is the son of jailed drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. This caused a wave of violence before Vice President Joe Biden’s visit next week.
Most of the violence happened in the city of Culiacan in the northern state of Sinaloa. This is where El Chapo’s powerful drug cartel was based before he was sent to the United States in 2017.
“El Chapo” is serving a life sentence at a supermax U.S. federal prison in Colorado. In 2019, a jury found him guilty on 10 counts, including continuing criminal enterprise and drug trafficking.
The U.S. State Department had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of his son, who had already been arrested in 2019. CNN says that Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had ordered that Guzmán’s son be freed in 2019 “to prevent more violence.”
