In a tense battle between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, former NFL tight end Greg Olsen, serving as a commentator, voiced his critique of Dak Prescott’s crucial decision on a game-deciding play. Despite opportunities, Dallas fell short in a 28-23 loss, with Olsen specifically questioning Prescott’s choice not to target CeeDee Lamb in a game-defining moment.
The multi-talented Gregory Walter Olsen is a beloved figure in the NFL, celebrated sportscaster, and former tight end with a stellar 14-season career. While we’ve seen him in the heat of the action as a commentator, today we’re turning our focus to a different side of Greg Olsen – his family. From career highlights to heartfelt moments, join us in exploring the heartwarming story of Greg and his wife Kara Olsen, as they navigate the world of football, family, and giving back.
Greg and Kara’s love story began at the University of Miami, where they were both wide-eyed freshmen. A memorable moment sealed their fate – Kara, just 17, caught Greg’s attention in a pair of “CANES” shorts that left an impression.
Their connection kicked off as a friendship, with cozy nights in Kara’s dorm, indulging in shows like The Bachelor and MTV’s Newlyweds. But sparks flew when Kara went on a date with someone else, and Greg found himself feeling a little jealous.
One day, he mustered the courage to ask Kara out, and their first official date involved a dinner at PF Chang’s followed by a screening of “Mean Girls.”
Since 2009, Greg Olsen and his wife, Kara, have shared a beautiful journey of love and family. Over the years, their family has grown to include three wonderful children: son Tate and the charming twins, Talbot and T.J. Not to forget their furry companion, a loyal German Shepherd named Tuck.
In March 2022, the couple celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary, and Greg, ever the sentimental soul, marked the occasion with an endearing Instagram post, saying, “At least one of us looks the same 😂 Happy 13th anniversary to my best friend! @karaolsen29 ❤️,” alongside a heartwarming collage of their wedding day and a recent snapshot.
In 2012, Greg and Kara welcomed their son, TJ, into the world, but with it came the challenge of a congenital heart defect. TJ’s journey was marked by four surgeries, including three open-heart procedures and the installation of a pacemaker.
Fast forward to May 24, 2021, when Greg shared a series of heartfelt tweets, revealing that TJ’s heart was facing a critical juncture that might necessitate a transplant. The Olsen family felt the love and support pouring in and expressed their gratitude for the heartwarming encouragement they received.

Fortunately, TJ’s surgery went well, and Greg extended his thanks to the donor family for their selflessness. This challenging journey inspired Greg and Kara to start the HEARTest Yard initiative, dedicated to aiding families facing similar crises.
With their dedication, the couple, along with their three-time Pro Bowl selection, have donated millions to this noble cause and played a pivotal role in establishing the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center, a remarkable 25,000-square-foot facility at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
In 2013, Greg and Kara Olsen embarked on a heartfelt journey by founding The HEARTest Yard Foundation, a beacon of hope for families dealing with pediatric cardiovascular challenges. This unique program, nestled under the umbrella of Receptions for Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation, extends a helping hand to children and their families facing congenital heart disease in the Carolinas.
The HEARTest Yard goes beyond traditional support, offering in-home nursing care and a range of vital medical services at The HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center.
As Greg Olsen himself puts it, “While we are in the hospital, we make sure it is clear that we are only there as T.J.’s family. We enjoy getting to know the other families and being a support system for one another.” It’s a heartwarming network of mutual support, where the strength of the congenital heart defect community shines, exemplifying the extraordinary bonds that form in times of adversity.

The Greg Olsen Foundation has recently made a significant $2.5 million donation to the Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, supporting the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center as part of the Giving Hope campaign. Greg and Kara Olsen, inspired by their son TJ’s journey with a congenital heart defect, have now contributed nearly $10 million over a decade to aid the hospital’s mission.
This transformative gift has led to the creation of a specialized care program, benefiting children with congenital heart disease and solidifying their place among the nation’s leading health systems.
