The St. Louis Cardinals picked Bader with the 100th pick in the third round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Cardinals and got a signing bonus of $400,000. He made his professional debut with the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League’s State College Spikes and hit two home runs in his first game.

In July, the Cardinals sent Bader to play for the Peoria Chiefs of the Class A Midwest League (MWL). In 206 at-bats with Peoria, he hit 9 home runs and had a.505 slugging percentage, which put him 10th in the League.

On July 25, 2017, the Cardinals brought Bader up to the big leagues to replace Dexter Fowler, who was hurt.

Before the 2018 season, MLB.com ranked Bader as the Cardinals’ fifth-best prospect. He started the season with Memphis.

On August 2, 2022, the Cardinals gave the New York Yankees cash and a player to be named later in exchange for pitcher Jordan Montgomery. On September 20, Bader got his first hit for the New York Yankees. It was a hit that brought in a run. At 29.1 feet per second, he had the fastest sprint speed of any Yankee who had scored 25 or more runs.
