Lyra’s fantasy story will be coming to a thrilling end in the third season of His Dark Materials.
The third and final season, based on Philip Pullman’s third book The Amber Spyglass, should come out by the end of 2022. But the BBC hasn’t said when it will come out officially.
As you can imagine, it was a very sad end for the cast, especially Dafne Keen, who played the lead. She told Collider in December 2020, “I’m trying not to think about it because I think a lot and I’m really, really looking forward to getting back.”
“Since I’ve known them for a few years, the people I work with have become my second family. They have watched me grow up, and I miss them a lot. I’m so excited to go back. People say, “I can’t wait for vacation,” but I can’t wait to get back to work on the movies.”
His Dark Materials Season 3 Release Date
His Dark Materials season three has not yet had a set date for when it will air. But it is in post-production right now. Filming was done at the end of November 2021.
The official His Dark Materials Twitter account wrote, “It has been an incredible six-year journey through the Worlds of #HisDarkMaterials, but it’s time to close the doors on the final chapter. The third season is over.”
Both the BBC and HBO have put the last two seasons at the top of their winter schedules. The first season started in November and went all the way through December, ending just before Christmas.
Given the amount of post-production work, including the CGI needed to make the daemons for each character, we’d bet on a similar release date in 2022.
Ruth Wilson did give a possible release date on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. She said that the third season of His Dark Materials might come out “this November.”
“That’s what I’m hearing,” she said, before telling the audience that the events of last season will “come to a head” in the new episodes.
At one point, the story of the last book was going to take place over two seasons instead of just one. However, it wasn’t possible to make that happen.
“I wanted to do it in two parts, but we’re only going to do it once. “You can’t always get what you want,” Jane Tranter, who is in charge of the show, told Deadline. “I’m just greedy. I really like the television real estate.
“I like stories that are told slowly and in a way that says, ‘Let’s really dig into this,’ but the truth is that I just wanted to keep making His Dark Materials for the rest of my life. The Amber Spyglass is very well adapted into eight episodes, and I will admit I was wrong and talking out of my butt.
We’ll let you know as soon as we know more about when the game will come out.
His Dark Materials Season 3 Cast
The BBC has said that Lyra (Dafne Keen), Will (Amir Wilson), Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson), Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas), Father MacPhail (Will Keen), and Lord Asriel will all be in the show (James McAvoy).
Lord Asriel made a quick, last-minute appearance at the end of season two. He had been missing for most of Lyra’s adventures, but he made a cameo appearance at the end.
Lyra had thought the selfish adventurer was her uncle her whole life, so she was devastated when she found out he was actually her father.
After he went missing, it seemed like James McAvoy wouldn’t be able to play the same role in the second season because of rules, but screenwriter Jack Thorne said that McAvoy was a key part of making it work.
In Radio Times, he said: “The executive producer, Dan McCulloch, did everything he could to make it happen, and James McAvoy came in and gave us a COVID day.
“One of the things I like most about James is that he stood his ground and yelled at the sky. It was wonderful to see him do that.
“I’m so glad it was kept a secret until now, and I’m thankful that the previews didn’t give anything away.”
And some new people have been added to the cast. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje from Suicide Squad will play Commander Ogunwe, Jamie Ward from The Durrells will play Father Gomez, and Amber Fitzgerald-Woolf will play Ama.
The rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch, and Xaphania will be played by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Justice League), Simon Harrison (Endeavour), and Chipo Chung (Into the Badlands).
Sian Clifford (Fleabag) and Jonathan Aris (Good Omens) will play Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, in season three. In the last Pullman book, they are better known as “Gallivespian spies.”
There’s also a chance we’ll see Lyra’s friend Roger, who was in the first season and played by Lewin Lloyd.
Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare), and Colonel John Parry (Andrew Scott) all died in season two, and while we wouldn’t bet all our money on them not coming back, it seems likely that they’re gone.
