Is Dove Cameron Gay? How Her Life Changed Since Coming Out

Dove Cameron is maturing into herself, and with that comes an adept juggling of personal space and sharing information.

In her now-famous August 2020 Instagram Live, she finally came out to her followers as “super queer.” Dove covered Gay Times almost a year later, and in the interview, she discussed her bisexuality at length. Dove claims that it wasn’t until that cover that anyone outside of her fandom realized she was gay.

She finally spoke up, saying, “People need me to have a fcking megaphone. I came out a year ago and thought that was going to be it. I didn’t realize that nobody fcking knew.”

How Dove Cameron Opened Up About Being Queer

In an interview with Gay Times, Dove Cameron talked openly about being queer. “I’ve been dropping hints about my sexuality for years because I was afraid to say it out loud,” Dove said, referring to her Instagram Live from August 2020, where she first told her fans that she was gay. 

She also said that she decided to come out at the time in part because her “We Belong” lyric video, which featured LGBTQ+ couples, was called “queerbaiting.” “I went on Instagram Live and said, ‘Guys, I had to tell you something. I may not have said it yet, but I’m very gay. This is something I want my music to show because it’s a part of who I am.'”

But letting the world know who she really is hasn’t been easy. Dove told Gay Times that she was afraid to come out at first. She said, “It felt like something I could never talk about.” “I think the industry has changed a lot in that people with platforms now have more room to be themselves and not be picked apart. I was really scared to come out, but one day I just gave up because I was acting like I was out, but I wasn’t.

Dove Cameron Discussed The Impact Her Bisexuality Has Had On Her Life

Dove Cameron’s life has changed drastically after she first publicly acknowledged her sexual orientation in 2020 and again in 2021. After making her sexual orientation public, the singer and actor spoke with E! News about her experiences since coming out.

Cameron said she was scared by how personal the news was, but now that she has shared it, she has no regrets. “I never feared that people would find out who I loved,” she said. “I was scared that people would be able to get to the human parts of me in an industry that can be so anti-human. That was definitely a sad thing, but it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I’m so much better now in my mind.”

Dove wants to share with her fans and supporters the happiness she has found since coming out. She said, “Social media has changed so much about how activists and people in the community work.” “I always tell my younger fans to stand up for their gay friends. Be in queer conversations. Make a space for openness in yourself, your community, and your circles, and that’s enough.”

She also talked about what it means to her to be queer. Dove said, “When I came out, it was more about who I am as a whole than who I choose to date or sleep with.” “I’ve decided to love myself, to be myself every day, and not change who I am depending on where I am.”
