Matthews and his Falcons teammates were on their way to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday morning for the team’s Thursday Night Football game against the Carolina Panthers when he got a call that his wife, Meggi, was going into labor.

Matthews flew back to Atlanta. He made it to the hospital to see Meggi give birth to their first child, a baby boy. And now he’s back in Charlotte, just in time for kickoff, and running to meet his teammates.

She grew up in Tampa, Florida. She lives in Flowery Branch, Georgia, at the moment. After she finished school, she went to Kennesaw State University to study Sports Broadcasting.

A Busy Thursday In Jake’s Life

Around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jake Matthews heard the phone in his hotel room ring.

He said, “I was like, ‘Why is the hotel phone ringing?'” “Since college, I haven’t had a wake-up call.”

He knew there was something wrong. His wife, Meggi Matthews, told him the night before that she felt strange and thought she might be sick.

Then, he looked at his phone and saw that he had missed 10 calls. Matthews says that his wife had been in labor for a few hours and had been at the hospital since about 5:00 a.m.

He knew he had to decide quickly whether to stay or leave because there was a big Thursday Night Football game that same day.

Atlanta is only a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Charlotte. Matthews and a member of the Falcons’ security team rented a car, left the hotel at 9:30 a.m., and got to the hospital to see his wife at 12:30 p.m.
Matthews was able to fly back to Charlotte with the Falcons’ owner and chairman, Arthur M. Blank, right before the Carolina Panthers game started.

About 80 minutes before kickoff, the Falcons posted a video of Matthews jogging in shorts and a T-shirt down the tunnel at Bank of America Stadium and into the Atlanta locker room to start getting ready for the NFC South game.

Meggi Matthews sent out a tweet saying, “Baby boy is safe and @jakematthews70 is safe on the plane to Charlotte.” RISE UP @AtlantaFalcons!!!! I tried hard, Falcons fans.”

Meggi Matthews gave birth in the afternoon in Atlanta, and Matthews went straight to owner Arthur Blank’s plane. He was flown to Charlotte and taken to the stadium by security.
