Jennifer Leigh McClellan is an American lawyer and politician who was born on December 28, 1972. She was recently elected to represent Virginia’s 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. She joined the Democratic Party in 2017 and has been the state senator for Virginia’s 9th district. She will be Virginia’s first black Congresswoman once she takes office.

McClellan ran for governor of Virginia in the Democratic primary in 2021, but she came in third and lost the nomination to former governor Terry McAuliffe. They live in Richmond with their two young children, Jackson and Samantha. David’s Facebook page says that he used to run the Democratic Party in Virginia and was the political director for the Democratic National Committee. He works for himself at the moment.

Jennifer told UVA Law in an interview that her original plan was to run for public office after she got married and had kids. She said at the time, “It was always something I thought I might do one day, maybe after I got married, had kids, and became a partner at Hunton & Williams.”

Details About Jennifer McClellan’s Career

McClellan started working as a lawyer at Hunton & Williams after he graduated from law school. She ran for office for the first time in 2005. She wanted Viola Baskerville’s old seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, which she gave up to run for lieutenant governor of Virginia. McClellan won the election and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017. Her district, the 71st, was made up of parts of the city of Richmond and Henrico County. 

In 2010, McClellan was the first Virginia delegate to take part in a legislative session while she was pregnant. She was in charge of the transition team when Terry McAuliffe was elected governor of Virginia in 2013.

McClellan was vice chair of the Virginia Democratic Party. She was the most important woman in the party, so she was automatically a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Jennifer was a superdelegate at the 2008 Democratic National Convention because she was a member of the DNC. She is also the vice chair of the Legislative Black Caucus in Virginia.

McClellan is the Democratic candidate for the 4th congressional district of Virginia in a special election. The seat became open when the person who had been in it, Donald McEachin, died on November 28, 2022, from colorectal cancer. On December 20, 2022, there was a primary election at firehouses. The general election was set for February 21, 2023.
