Jon Ellis Meacham is an American author, reviewer, historian, and biographer of presidents. Since November 7, 2021, he has been the Canon Historian of the Washington National Cathedral. He is a contributing writer for The New York Times Book Review, a contributing editor for Time, and was the editor-in-chief of Newsweek.

Jon was the executive editor and executive vice president at Random House. He has written several books. His book American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 2009. At Vanderbilt University, he is the Carolyn T. and Robert M. Rogers Endowed Chair in American Presidency.

Jon Meacham Is Married To Margaret Smythe

Meacham has been with his wife, Margaret Smythe for 26 years. In December 1996, he got married. Even the news of his wedding was printed in a newspaper.

The Star-Herald put up a picture from a 1996 newspaper that said they were getting married. It said, “On Saturday, December 14, at 6:30 p.m., Margaret Keith Smythe and Jon Ellis Meacham, both of New York City, will get married at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Leland.”

Margaret recently shared photos of her and her husband on Instagram in honor of their 26th wedding anniversary. In their more than 26 years of marriage, Margaret has often been introduced as the wife of a famous writer and historian. Still, she is an independent woman who works and spends time with her family.

Jon And Margaret Are The Parents To Three Children

After he married Margaret, they were blessed with three children. Mary, Maggie, and Sam are his kids.  The happy family of five takes trips together and gets together to celebrate every event.

The father of three loves and is surprised by how fast his kids are growing up. He often posts on Instagram to wish his kids a happy birthday and show how much he loves, is amazed by, and is proud of them.

Meet Jon Meacham’s Wife, Margaret Smythe

Smythe went to St. Andrew’s Episcopal High School in Jackson, Virginia, and then went to the University of Virginia and the University of Aix-en-Provence, France, to study English. Under a Fulbright fellowship, Smythe taught English in Metz, France.  Also, before she married Jon, she taught English at The Nightingale-Bamford School.  Later, Margaret changed her mind about what she wanted to do for a living and started her own business.

She is proud to own Reed Smythe, which works with artists to make works of art for homes and gardens. Her online shop sells jewelry, stationery, furniture, and other items for the home and everyday life on their website.

The husband and wife team has been able to improve their businesses and enjoy life as a happy family.  Margaret’s wonderful husband has now been working for 30 amazing and wonderful years. But Meacham’s job isn’t the only thing in his life that brings him the most joy. He has a family to go home to after a long day away from home.
