The US state of Massachusetts elected Democrat Maura Healey as America’s first openly lesbian governor on Tuesday, according to television networks.
Healey, 51, easily defeated Republican opponent Geoff Diehl, according to NBC and Fox News projections.
The Human Rights Campaign, which advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, praised Healey’s historic triumph.
After eight years of Republican rule under Charlie Baker, who chose not to run for a third term, Healey’s victory returns the state’s governorship to Democrats.
Healey, who would be the first female governor of Massachusetts, was expected to easily defeat Diehl, who had been sponsored by former President Donald Trump.
The outcome was generally anticipated, with Healey, Massachusetts’ attorney general since 2014, comfortably ahead in the polls in the run-up to the election.
“By electing a pro-equality champion, Massachusetts accepted a platform of equality and inclusiveness,” the organization’s interim president, Joni Madison, said in a statement.

As head of the AG’s civil rights division, Healey challenged the legality of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act in 2009. This law said that only one woman and one man could get married.
Same-s*x couples who were legally allowed to get married in Massachusetts since 2004 were not allowed to get benefits from the law. Healey said that the federal law took away from state power and forced the state to treat its own people unfairly.

Healey won because a federal judge said the law was against the Constitution. Three years later, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with Healey’s arguments and made same-s*x marriage legal. Maura told InStyle about how important her win was:
“I had the chance to challenge the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which was unfair to same-s*x couples, in the first successful case in the country. We took that case to the Supreme Court and won. This helped change things for equality across the country and for same-s*x couples.
