Tavares Montgomery Williams, known as Monty Williams, was born on October 8, 1971, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He played college basketball at the University of Notre Dame and was selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft. During his playing career, Williams played for five NBA teams, including the Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers.

After retiring from playing in 2003, Williams began his coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Oklahoma City Thunder.
