Berkus and Fernando Bengoechea, a world-famous photographer and his partner at the time, were on vacation in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka, in December 2004 when a natural disaster hit the area. The huge tsunami broke through their hut on the beach and swept everything away. Even though the waves were strong, Berkus and Bengoechea were able to stay together for a while.

They eventually had to go their separate ways. Bengoechea was nowhere to be found after the waves stopped. People said he was missing, but his body was never found. Berkus says this about what his husband has taught him about love: “The biggest lesson for me is that no matter what I’ve been through—and I’ve been very public about what I’ve survived—I will believe, because [Jeremiah] taught me to believe, that if you do the work on yourself that’s needed to make yourself available to great love, then it’s possible that great love can come around again.”

Nate And Jeremiah Got Married In 2014 And Have Two Kids

Before meeting Berkus at age 26, Brent had never been in a serious relationship. Their instant connection on their first date in 2012 was a pleasant surprise. “I can remember thinking, “Oh God, what is this?” Not what I thought it would be, “says Brent. “There was something about him that made me feel so safe when I was with him.”  For Berkus, it was an unexpected new start.

After going out with Jeremiah Brent for almost a year, Berkus got engaged to him in April 2013. They got married in New York City on May 4, 2014. They have a daughter named Poppy Brent-Berkus, who was born on March 23, 2015, and a son named Oskar Michael Brent-Berkus, who was born on March 26, 2018. Berkus and his family live in Manhattan right now.

American interior designer and TV personality Jeremiah Brent is from the United States. In 2011, he started the full-service interior design firm Jeremiah Brent Design (JBD), which has offices in both Los Angeles and New York City. He is in the TLC show Nate & Jeremiah by Design from 2017 and the Netflix show Say I Do as the event designer (2020).

Jeremiah Brent is an actor and producer who is known for The Ode (2008), Nate & Jeremiah by Design (2017), and The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project (2021). Early in 2014, Brent and Nate Berkus were in ads for Banana Republic’s “True Outfitters” line in magazines like InStyle and Rolling Stone. The New York Times said that they were the first people of the same gender to be in magazine ads.
