Skylar Grey had to sell her music catalog so that she could pay for her divorce from Todd Mandel.
“Since 2017, I’ve been going through a divorce and a lawsuit, which was emotionally and financially ruining me,” Grey, 36, said in an interview with Variety that came out Monday.
Grey wrote the 2010 hits “Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem and Rihanna and “Coming Home” by Diddy. She also played an important part in Dr. Dre’s 2011 Grammys performance of “I Need a Doctor.”
Grey told Variety, “No one can say I didn’t write those songs just because I don’t own the rights to them anymore.” “I didn’t want to sell them, but it was the only way for me to move on from the past.”
The musician never wanted to give up the rights to her hits, but she is glad they helped her get out of her marriage.
“Now that the case is over, I feel so much better. I don’t have to talk to lawyers every day, and I don’t have to pay all these legal bills,” she said. “Right now, I’m just concentrating on making a new catalog, new money, and new chances.”
Grey may be excited about the future, but she is still proud of the work she has done in the past.
“[My songs] are still very important to me, and I will always love them, but things are different now. I don’t get any of that money anymore when one of those songs is used in a movie or something else. “Unfortunately, most of the money I got for my catalog went to taxes and my ex-husband,” she laughed.

“It’s like your life’s work, and then all of a sudden you realize, ‘OK, I have to give away most of this.’ But I had no other choice. If I hadn’t been able to do something like that, I might not have been able to get out of the case.
Grey is back in the public eye with a new album called “Grey,” which she calls a “cathartic release” after her divorce.
“It shows a lot of how I’ve felt over the past however many years,” she said. “And it was hard, there was a lot of trouble, I was depressed, and I went through a lot of sh*ts. So I think this album shows how I felt and what I was going through at the time.”
