The head coach of the Texas Longhorns, Chris Beard, was taken under arrest early on Monday morning (Dec 12) and charged with domestic violence.

According to the Travis County Sherriff’s office, Chris Beard, who coaches the men’s basketball team for the Texas Longhorns, was arrested early Monday morning on charges of domestic and family violence.

Beard was arrested for a third-degree felony. On Monday, the University of Texas released a statement about the situation. They wrote, “The University knows about Chris Beard’s situation. We are still gathering information and watching the legal process.”

Austin Police responded to a “disturbance hot shot,” per an Austin PD spokesperson, at 12:15 a.m.  CBS Sports reached out to Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte, who could not be immediately reached for comment, nor could the program’s men’s basketball sports information director. 

The former Texas Tech coach is in his second season with Texas after signing a seven-year deal worth $5 million per season. The No. 2-ranked Longhorns are 7-1 and last played at home on Saturday, beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Next up for the team is a Monday night home match against Rice.

During her time at Wayland from 2004 to 2006, she was honored by the Sooner Athletic Conference twice and was named the Pioneers’ most valuable player in 2004 and 2006.
