The company announced the owner and co-founder of the sports drink company Red Bull died on Saturday. According to the company, Dietrich Mateschitz started exporting the drink in Austria in 1987.

Red Bull said in a company-wide email to employees, “In these moments, the over-riding feeling is one of sadness, But soon the sadness will make way for gratitude – gratitude for what he changed, moved, encouraged and made possible for so many individual people. We will remain connected to him respectfully and lovingly.”

Under Mateschitz, Red Bull has become known for heavily promoting extreme sports and events, like a record-breaking skydive from the edge of space in 2012. It also supports two Formula One team.

Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a written statement, “He was an incredible visionary entrepreneur and a man who helped to transform our sport and created the Red Bull brand that is known all around the world.”

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, which is in charge of governing motorsports, called Mateschitz “a towering figure in motorsport.”

Red Bull had been involved in the sport as a sponsor for many years before buying the Jaguar F1 team in 2004 and the Minardi team in 2005. He also bought the Formula One track in Spielberg, which is now called the Red Bull Ring and hosts the Austrian Grand Prix.
