Deborra-Lee Furness was born and raised in Australia. She went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City to study acting. After she graduated in early 1980, she debuted as an actress. Later, she was in the popular US soap opera Falcon Crest before going back to Australia. In 1988, Furness won Best Actress awards from the Film Critics Circle of Australia and the Golden Space Needle for her role in the movie Shame.

Furness is known for her work helping orphans around the world and making international adoptions easier. This is especially true in her home country of Australia, where she is a patron of National Adoption Awareness Week and one of the people who came up with the idea.
