Police Secure Arrest In Probe Of Former NHL Adam Johnson’s Death

Adam Robert Johnson, born on June 22, 1994, and passing away on October 28, 2023, was an American professional ice hockey forward. After completing his second season with the Bulldogs in 2016–17, during which he recorded 18 goals and 37 points in 42 games, ranking second on the team in both goals and points, Johnson secured Minnesota-Duluth’s spot in the 2017 Frozen Four. His overtime power-play goal led to a 3–2 victory over Boston University.

During the 2017–18 season, Johnson emerged as the second-highest scorer for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He marked his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 21, 2019, contributing to a 2–1 victory over the Nashville Predators.

The arrested individual, not yet named, faces charges of suspicion of manslaughter and remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall stated, “Our investigation commenced immediately after this tragedy, and we have been conducting thorough inquiries to reconstruct the events leading to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.” The incident occurred during a game between Johnson’s team, the Nottingham Panthers, and the Sheffield Steelers on October 28.

Johnson and an opposing player collided, resulting in the other player’s skate slashing Johnson’s neck. The arena was evacuated, and medical responders attended to Johnson, who was later pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

Describing the incident as a “freak accident,” the Panthers expressed condolences, while the English Ice Hockey Association responded by mandating neck guards in 2024, a move typically reserved for amateurs but now seeing increased demand following Johnson’s tragic death.

The tragic incident occurred during a game in England where his neck was cut by a skate blade. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when the unfortunate incident happened in the second period at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.

The Nottingham Panthers expressed deep sorrow in announcing Adam Johnson’s untimely death, describing it as a “freak accident.” The team extended condolences to Johnson’s family, his partner, and all his friends during this extremely difficult time.
