Irene Cara was born Irene Cara Escalera in The Bronx, New York City, on March 18, 1959. Her father, Gaspar Escalera, was a retired saxophonist who worked in a factory. Her mother, Louise, was a movie usher. Irene’s Cuban-American mother and Puerto Rican father give her a mixed background. Cara has four older brothers and sisters, and when she was three, she made it to the finals of the Little Miss America pageant. 

Irene studied acting, music, and dance when she was young. She also learned to play the piano by ear. She started her career by singing and dancing on Spanish-language TV.
