Monahan’s early career took shape at IMG Worldwide, where he played a pivotal role in developing the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. At the young age of 32, he became the tournament’s first director. In addition, Monahan co-founded Golf Fights Cancer in 2003, a charity that has raised nearly $5 million for cancer research. He then transitioned to the Fenway Sports Group in Boston, working in sales and further expanding his expertise in the sports industry.

Jay Monahan’s Rise To PGA Tour Commissioner:

In March 2013, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, overseeing various essential aspects of the Tour’s operations, such as business development, corporate marketing and partnerships, title sponsor relations, retail licensing, and media sales.

After serving as the Deputy Commissioner for two years, Monahan assumed the position of Chief Operating Officer. Following PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem’s retirement announcement in November 2016, Monahan officially became the commissioner in January 2017. As commissioner, he has been instrumental in driving the growth and success of the PGA Tour.

Monahan’s leadership and vision have propelled the PGA Tour to new heights. In February 2022, he received a letter from LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, expressing interest from players to participate in a new golf league alongside the PGA Tour. Monahan made it clear that he was not in favor of such a coexistence. Following the creation and completion of several LIV Golf events, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into potential monopolization and anticompetitive behavior on behalf of the PGA Tour.
