Kate and John’s paths crossed in 2008 at the Republican National Convention, where John, reporting for The Daily Show, encountered Kate, an advocate for Vets for Freedom. At that time, John, a British national with a temporary work visa, faced the looming threat of deportation.
Kate and a group of veterans intervened, concealing John from security personnel who discovered him in a restricted area, potentially leading to his arrest. This night turned out to be the beginning of John and Kate’s connection, leading to them starting a relationship shortly after.

In July 2010, John and Kate took a significant step in their relationship by getting engaged during their time in St. Thomas. After the 9/11 attacks, Norley enlisted in the Army. She shared in a 2008 American Veterans Center conference that it was the scariest day of her life. She had no clue about what was going on, but she felt a strong need to respond.
During that conference, Norley emphasized the importance of acknowledging and supporting female veterans. She explained that upon returning from overseas, there was limited awareness about the experiences and sacrifices of women in the military. In her role in the Army, she served as a combat medic and mental health specialist.

John and Kate are parents to two sons, born in 2015 and 2018. The firstborn, Hudson, arrived prematurely, and John shared the challenges they faced during Kate’s difficult pregnancy while he was also working on his show.
