After the 9/11 attacks, Norley enlisted in the Army. She shared in a 2008 American Veterans Center conference that it was the scariest day of her life. She had no clue about what was going on, but she felt a strong need to respond.

During that conference, Norley emphasized the importance of acknowledging and supporting female veterans. She explained that upon returning from overseas, there was limited awareness about the experiences and sacrifices of women in the military. In her role in the Army, she served as a combat medic and mental health specialist.
