A Closer Look At Paula Abdul’s Career

Abdul’s journey in the entertainment industry commenced at 18 when she successfully auditioned for the Los Angeles Lakers cheerleading squad, securing the position from a pool of 700 candidates. Rising swiftly, she assumed the role of head choreographer for the Lakers Girls, crafting routines not only for them but also for various NBA teams.

Simultaneously, Abdul made a mark as a sought-after choreographer for music videos, collaborating with renowned artists such as Janet Jackson, Duran Duran, and The Jacksons.

Her breakthrough occurred in 1987 when Virgin Records discovered Abdul and inked a recording contract. The release of her debut album, “Forever Your Girl,” in 1988 marked a significant milestone. The album yielded four chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl,” “Cold Hearted,” and “Opposites Attract.” With global sales exceeding 12 million copies, Abdul earned a Grammy Award for Best Music Video for “Opposites Attract.”

Building on her success, Abdul’s second album, “Spellbound,” hit the shelves in 1991, generating four top-ten hits: “Rush Rush,” “The Promise of a New Day,” “Blowing Kisses in the Wind,” and “Vibeology.” The album achieved sales of over 7 million copies worldwide, earning Abdul another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Rush Rush.”

Despite featuring singles like “My Love Is for Real,” “Crazy Cool,” and “Ain’t Never Gonna Give You Up,” the album garnered less success, selling only 3 million copies globally and receiving mixed reviews from critics.

This period was marked by personal and professional challenges for Abdul, including a car accident, a divorce, an eating disorder, and a lawsuit from a backup singer alleging the unauthorized use of her vocals in Abdul’s songs.
