Despite the distance between Los Angeles, where Ralph resided, and Philadelphia, Hughes’ home, their love transcended boundaries. In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, a story was recalled by Ralph from when the pair began dating in the early aughts. A gift was given to her by Hughes in a blue box, and inside, a Pennsylvania almanac was found. On the inside of the box, he had written, “So you will know more about all the things I truly love.” Ralph recalled feeling moved by the gift. “I was so fascinated that this man wanted me to know right off the get-go that, ‘I am all about my state, and I love my city,’ ” she said.

A strong advocate for providing health insurance to the uninsured and increasing wages for low-income workers, Hughes has further facilitated the raising of over $1 million in scholarship funds, benefiting underserved students attending college.
