Pena signed with Houston and made his professional debut with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Class A Short Season New York-Penn League. In 36 games, he hit.250 with one home run and ten RBIs and was named an All-Star.

Pena started the year with the Class A Midwest League’s Quad Cities River Bandits, where he was named an All-Star. In June, he was moved up to the Class A-Advanced Carolina League’s Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
