Dame Vivienne Westwood, who was a founder of the punk rock fashion movement, a designer who was popular with celebrities, and an activist for a long time, has died. She turned 81.
Westwood died on Thursday (Dec.29) in Clapham, South London, surrounded by friends and family, her team said in a statement. The cause of death was not made public right away.
“Vivienne will always be in my heart,” said Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s husband and a designer who works with her. “We worked right up until the end, and she gave me lots of things to do. Thank you, darling.” Westwood was known as a fashion industry disruptor and a pioneer of the punk rock look that took over London in the mid-1970s. Both her clothes and her causes won her a lot of praise.

Even though Westwood and Kronthaler have been married for a long time, they have never had children together.
