Thom Bell, a producer, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist, died Thursday (Dec. 22).

His lawyer, Michael Silver, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Bell had died at his home in Bellingham, Washington. No cause of death was known right away.
“The Sound of Philadelphia” was made by Bell, Kenny Gamble, and Leon Huff in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In a statement to the Inquirer, Gamble said, “Tommy and I have been best friends for more than 60 years.” “When we first met, we decided to start writing songs together and make Kenny and Tommy, a singing duo, and then The Romeos, our band. Leon Huff and I were happy to have him as a member of the Mighty Three, the group of musicians who wrote songs for TSOP.
“He was a great artist and my best friend. The names of Gamble, Huff, and Bell will last forever. Rest in peace, bud!”
Huff told the news outlet, “Thom Bell was my favorite musician, arranger, songwriter, and music producer of all time! It was an honor and a pleasure to work with him creatively and as a business partner. Rest in peace.”
