Angela Bassett, an American actress won a Golden Globe on Tuesday for her role as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She is the first actor ever to win a major acting award for a movie based on Marvel Comics.
Bassett won and was nominated for the second time that evening. She took home the award for best actress in a musical or comedy for “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” a biopic about Tina Turner that came out in 1993.
“I’ve got to find my words. I’m so nervous. “My heart is just beating,” Bassett said as she took the stage to accept the award. “The late Tony Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance, just waiting for you to decide its destiny. But for that destiny to come true, I think it takes courage to have faith. It requires patience, as we just heard. And you have to be sure of yourself. It’s not easy because my past is challenging and has many unexpected turns, but by the grace of God, I’m here. I stand here grateful.”
Bassett used the opportunity to thank her husband, fellow actor Courtney B. Vance, her family, and her Marvel co-workers, including “Wakanda Forever” director Ryan Coogler, Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore, Kevin Feige, and Louis D’Esposito.
