Ian Tyson, a Canadian folk legend and cowboy storyteller who wrote “Four Strong Winds” has died at the age of 89. The man from Victoria, British Columbia, died on Thursday at his ranch near Longview, Alberta. According to his manager, Paul Mascioli, he had been having health problems for a long time.
His former wife and musical partner, Sylvia Tyson, said that the 89-year-impact old’s on Canadian culture is hard to overstate. “I played with a young band at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, and they wanted me to do Four Strong Winds with them. It was a pretty young crowd, and I didn’t really expect that kind of response, but everyone in the crowd sang Four Strong Winds, “she told CBC News in a phone interview on Thursday.
“It’s kind of like the Canadian national anthem.” She said that Tyson had major surgery a few years ago and never fully recovered.
Tyson continued to perform live concerts despite damage to his voice caused by a heart attack and surgery in 2015. However, Tyson’s heart problems reappeared, forcing him to cancel appearances in 2018. He did, however, continue to play the guitar at home. “I think that’s the key to my perseverance because you have to use it or lose it,” he stated in 2019.

Tyson got married twice and both marriages ended in divorce. He was previously got married to Sylvia Fricker, his musical partner. Tyson met Sylvia, and they started dating, both on and off stage, and moved to New York together. Their first album, “Ian & Sylvia,” came out in 1962. It was mostly made up of old songs. Their big break came with their second album, “Four Strong Winds,” which came out in 1964. The title track was one of the only original songs on the album.
