Mottola was born in The Bronx to an Italian-American family from the middle class. In 1962, he finished Iona Grammar School, and in 1966, he finished Iona Prep. He spent some time in military school and then went to high school. After dropping out of Hofstra University on Long Island, he joined an R&B cover band called The Exotics as a guitarist and singer.
Mottola joined the music scene around the middle of the 1960s as a recording artist for CBS Records. He used the name “T.D. Valentine” for his music.
