Alex Ovechkin took another step toward hockey history on Friday night. He scored his 801st and 802nd goals of his career to move past Gordie Howe and into second place on the NHL’s all-time list. Now, the only name above Ovechkin’s is “The Great One.” Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals, which were once thought to be impossible to beat, are at the top of the list. And since Ovechkin’s scoring rate hasn’t changed much as he’s gotten older, it’s probably not a matter of if, but when, No. 8 passes the legendary No. 99.
