Alexei Navalny, the prominent opposition figure in Russia over the last ten years, has reportedly passed away while being detained in a high-security prison in the Arctic Circle, according to the Russian prison authorities.
Navalny, a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, was serving a 19-year sentence on charges of extremism that were widely believed to be politically motivated. He had been transferred to a notoriously strict penal colony towards the end of last year.
Yulia Navalnaya, his wife, has called upon the international community to intervene and hold the Russian regime accountable. Ivan Zhdanov, a key associate of Navalny and the chief of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, expressed strong suspicions that Navalny had been assassinated, describing it as a confirmed murder. The prison authorities in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region, where Navalny was incarcerated, stated that he had fallen ill following a walk on Friday.
According to a statement, Navalny “almost immediately lost consciousness.” Emergency medical personnel were promptly summoned and attempted resuscitation, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The prisoner was subsequently pronounced dead by the emergency doctors. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
