Bart Durham, originally from Ripley, West Tennessee, served in the U.S. Army for two years before pursuing law studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and later completing his degree at Southern Law University in Memphis. Graduating in 1963, he practiced law in Memphis from 1966 to 1969 before relocating to Nashville.

In Nashville, he served as assistant state attorney general before establishing his own law firm in 1975, which bears his name.
