Actor and novelist Bob McGrath, who was well known for his role as Bob Johnson on Sesame Street, has passed away at the age of 90.
On Sunday, at his home in northern New Jersey, Bob McGrath, who had played the sweater-clad local music teacher and general advice-giver on “Sesame Street” for nearly half a century, passed away.

NPR says that Bob’s daughter, Cat McGrath, said that the star’s death was caused by complications from a stroke. After Bob’s family posted on social media about his death, Cat made her statement.
She wrote, “Hello Facebook friends, the McGrath family has some sad news to share. Our father, Bob McGrath, passed away today. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.”

Bob McGrath’s Early Life And Career Beginning
Robert Emmett McGrath was born in Ottawa, Illinois, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, on June 13, 1932. Edmund Thomas McGrath, a farmer, and Flora Agnes (Halligan) McGrath had five children, and he was the youngest.
Robert’s mother, who sang and played the piano, saw his talent when he was only 5 years old. Soon, he was competing in Chicago and winning, and he was also on the radio. He studied on his own, but he planned to go to school for engineering.
But in the summer after he graduated from high school, he was asked to go to a music camp outside of Chicago. Teachers there told him to change his plans, so he “turned around,” as he said in an interview for the Television Academy Foundation in 2004.
He got his degree from the University of Michigan in 1954 with a major in voice. He served in the Army for the next two years, mostly in Stuttgart, Germany, with the Seventh Army Symphony. Then he moved to New York, where he went to the Manhattan School of Music and got his master’s degree.

He got a job at a private school for boys in Manhattan called St. David’s. Until 1961, when “Sing Along With Mitch” came out, he paid the bills by taking on free-lance singing jobs through a vocal contractor.
