Chris Coons was born in Greenwich, Connecticut to Kenelm Winslow “Ken” Coons and Sarah Louise “Sally” (née Ives), with his ancestry consisting of Irish and English roots. He grew up in Hockessin, Delaware, where he attended Yorklyn Elementary School and H.B. DuPont Middle School. Due to financial struggles, his parents separated in the mid-1970s, and Coons and his brothers lived with their mother for several years until she married Robert W. Gore, the President of W. L. Gore and Associates in 1977.
