Humza Yousaf, the new Scottish National Party (SNP) leader, has taken over as Scotland’s first minister, succeeding Nicola Sturgeon. He won the leadership race after a five-week battle that ended on March 27, 2023.
From 2018 to 2021, he was First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s justice secretary. Since 2021, he has been First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s health secretary. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Glasgow Pollok constituency. From 2011 to 2016, he was the MSP for the Glasgow area.
As the world turns its attention towards Mr. Yousaf, many are also curious about the woman who has supported him throughout his campaign to become SNP leader and Scotland’s first minister. This article takes a closer look at his wife, including her background, family, career, and controversies.
Meet Nadia El-Nakla, Humza Yousaf’s Wife
Nadia El-Nakla is a psychotherapist whose father is Palestinian and was born in Scotland. Her brother and his wife live in Gaza, therefore she has family there. She was chosen as an SNP councillor for the West End of Dundee in May 2022.
At the time she was elected, she said, “I really want to use the next five years to invest in women and get them into politics, because I don’t think we’ve had a female councillor in the Broughty Ferry ward in I don’t know how long.”
El-Nakla worked as an assistant for Scottish Health Minister Shona Robison before she ran for office. She also ran for the SNP in North East Scotland in the Holyrood election of 2021, but she didn’t win.

Controversies About Humza Yousaf’s Wife, El-Nakla
The Scottish Daily Express said that she admitted to having an affair with a fellow SNP member who was accused of sending her racist SMS.
Yousaf and his second wife took a nursery to court in 2021, claiming that it had discriminated against their daughter because she was black. After being told there was no room for the couple’s daughter at Little Scholars in Broughty Ferry, near Dundee, El-Nakla and a friend sent in phony applications for children with “white-sounding names.” Even though a watchdog advised the daycare to improve how it did things, El-Nakla stopped suing it. The nursery said that the claims were not true.
In a statement made by their lawyer in August 2021, the pair claimed, “Despite having many chances, Little Scholars Day Nursery in Broughty Ferry has not admitted, explained, or apologized for their discriminatory actions.” We’ve both fought against hatred our whole lives, and we’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of cruel words. We won’t let anyone treat our kids badly. We just want our children to be treated the same as everyone else’s, no matter what color their skin is or what religion they follow.
Humza Yousaf Shares Love For His Family
Since Yousaf is going to be the future First Minister of Scotland, his wife, and family will be in the news and in the public eye a lot more. After being confirmed as the winner of the leadership election, Yousaf shared a few lines about his family in his speech.
He pledged to govern “all of Scotland” and reassured his daughters that there was still “no more important job in my life than being your dad.” At his side at the Murrayfield Stadium was his second wife Nadia El-Nakla, their daughter Amal, and his stepdaughter.
