Jacob Rothschild began his career at N M Rothschild & Sons in London in 1963 but resigned in 1980 due to a family dispute. He sold his stake in the bank and took control of Rothschild Investment Trust, now known as RIT Capital Partners plc.

In 1991, he co-founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group, later renamed St. James’s Place plc. Rothschild also engaged in various ventures, including an unsuccessful bid for British American Tobacco with Sir James Goldsmith and Kerry Packer in 1989.
