Jeff was filming Rancho Deluxe in Paradise Valley, Montana, in 1975, while Susan was working there at the time. “I’m doing this scene with Sam Waterston and Harry Dean Stanton, and I can’t take my eyes off this gorgeous, I didn’t know what she was, a maid or a waitress, but I couldn’t take my eyes off her,” Jeff told People in an interview in 2018 about their first meeting.
Susan didn’t feel the same way right away, but for him, it was an instant connection. Jeff has said that asking Susan out wasn’t easy; when he “finally got the courage to ask her out,” she said no. Even though they were turned down at first, they ran into each other again and hit it off. Jeff said, “She came to the party, we danced, and we fell in love, and that was it.”

Jeff wrote in a 2014 essay for Good Housekeeping that he was “crazy in love” with Susan, but he wasn’t sure if they should get married. “I had such great parents, and neither Sue nor I knew if we had that in us. “Losing my freedom was the most important thing to me,” he wrote. “After being on the fence for two years, I finally worked up the courage to ask Sue to marry me, knowing that I could always get a divorce. God bless me, I finally got with the times.”
The wedding took place on June 5, 1977. Bridges said that he didn’t expect things to turn out that way, even though they were married for a long time and were happy. He said, “I don’t know how women or other guys feel about marriage, but when I was young and in my 20s, I was scared of it.” I thought it was a big step toward death.
