Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona said in an interview that she is leaving the Democratic Party and registering as a political independent.
The first-term senator told POLITICO in a 45-minute interview that she won’t caucus with Republicans and that she plans to vote the same way she has for the past four years. “Neither my values nor my behavior will change,” she said.
Sinema said in an interview on Thursday, “I’ve registered as an independent in Arizona. I know this might surprise some people, but I think it makes a lot of sense. I’ve never really tried to fit into a party box, and I don’t want to,” she said. “Removing myself from the partisan structure is not only true to who I am and how I work, but I also think it will give many people across the state and country who are tired of partisanship a place to belong.”
Her switch comes only a few days after the Democratic Party won a narrow majority in the Senate. This happened when Georgia incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock won a run-off election in the state, beating out retired football player Herschel Walker.
