Mercedes Schlapp is an American communications expert and political commentator who works for both English and Spanish media. She has worked for two presidents. From September 2017 to July 2019, she was the White House Director of Strategic Communications for the Trump administration.
Before that, Mercedes was the director of specialty media for George W. Bush. She then became the senior advisor for strategic communications for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign. She is also a co-founder of Cove Strategies, which helps businesses and nonprofits with their media strategy.

Inside Matt And Mercedes’ Relationship
Matt And Mercedes met in 2001 at the Bush White House. Matt worked in the political department and was a sarcastic Midwesterner. She worked in the press shop and called herself a “fashionable Latina from Miami.” Mercedes went up to Matt after a staff meeting and suggested they talk about the areas where their jobs overlapped. “I thought she wanted to be with me,” said Matt, years old. “Really?” Mercedes asked. “No, I was very serious about my job at the time.”
Matt and Mercedes both said in an interview in 2015 that they knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together on September 11, 2001. “There was a lot of chaos in the White House, and I remember only wanting to do two things: call my family and let them know I was okay, and find out where Mercy was,” he said. “When I finally found her, I knew she was very important to me and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.” They told their story in the kitchen of their five-bedroom brick home, which was near George Washington’s Mount Vernon, while their five daughters, all under the age of 14, sang “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast” around a piano in the next room.

Matt And His Wife Have Five Daughters
Matt Schlapp and his wife Mercedes have five daughters. They live in Alexandria, Virginia, with their family. Matt’s five daughters all showed up at CPAC 2015, which was the first CPAC after Matt became chair of the American Conservative Union. Vianna Schlapp, Matt’s oldest daughter, spoke briefly and said that her father is her hero.
