His mother, Debra, achieved athletic success herself, playing basketball and volleyball at DePaul University and being elected into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. His father, John, played college baseball as a pitcher for Eastern Illinois.

Despite receiving only one Division I offer from Chicago State, Strus chose to play at Division II Lewis University, following in the footsteps of his older brother Marty.
