But my dad sold used cars and my mom worked as a bookkeeper in a locksmith shop. They got a divorce, and I remember nuns bringing us big cans of food. They lived there for a year before she went back to New York to go to Hunter College, where she got a B.A. in theatre criticism and graduated in 2000. She moved to Los Angeles just before the terrorist attacks on September 11.
