Ross Chastain’s Last-Lap Martinsville Wall-Ride Earns Him A Title Shot
Ross Chastain was able to make it to the NASCAR Cup Series championship race by riding the wall on the last lap at Martinsville.
On the last lap of the race, Chastain went from 10th to fifth by driving his car full speed into the wall. He sped up against the wall in Turns 3 and 4 and passed five cars so he could compete for the 2022 Cup Series championship in the winner-takes-all race at Phoenix on November 6.
Christopher Bell won the race and joined Chastain, Joey Logano, and Chase Elliott in the last four. Denny Hamlin was always in the running for the championship, but Chastain’s move on the last lap got rid of him. Up until the last two corners, Hamlin had more points than Chastain and was in the top four, as per Yahoo.
Millennials will know that what Chastain did was the best way to win a race at Martinsville on EA Sports’ NASCAR video games in the early 2000s when the car damage was turned off. And when Chastain got out of his car, he talked about those video games.
“I played NASCAR 05 a lot with my brother Chad on the Gamecube when we were kids, and you can get away with it,” Chastain said. “And I never knew for sure if it would work. When I was eight, I did that.”
