Baszler said she was dating a woman at the time, but she told the host of MMA Roasted that a person’s gender doesn’t affect whether she likes them or not. The UFC star at the time said, “I’ve done both, and I’m currently dating a woman.” But I’m not the kind of person who would paint herself black or white. I’m just in that place right now.

Baszler got her start in MMA on October 31, 2003, when she fought Tina Johnson at Reality Cage Fighting in South Dakota. After she won that, she also won her next match, which was on November 14, 2003, against Christy Zimmerman. In the next match, on May 15, 2004, she lost to Kelly Kobold for the first time.
In 2005, she fought against Heather Lobs for Jungle Madness 2 and won.

During the next three years, she competed at UCS, Ring of Fire, Freestyle Combat Challenge, MFC, Bodogfight, and NFF, among other independent events. She beat Cindy Romero, Julie Kedzie, Roxanne Modafferi, and Samantha Anderson, but lost twice to Amanda Buckner.
She fought for EliteXC for the first time on July 27, 2007, at a ShoXC event. In the first round, she put Jan Finney to sleep with an armbar. She went on to beat Jennifer Tate in 0.44 seconds in the first round and Keiko Tamai with an amazing twister that made her tap out in the first round as well. After that, she never looked back.
