Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev was overwhelmed after winning the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. His victory came after a two-and-a-half-hour match and a marathon, 47-stroke championship point. It was Rublev’s 50th match win, and it came against his longtime friend and fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev, who was ranked No. 5.
Rublev passed out from exhaustion and relief on Monday after his final overhead slam was not returned, giving him the match. But after that, he turned his attention to even more important things.
The 25-year-old took out a marker and wrote on the lens of a TV camera that was covering the final, “Peace Peace Peace All We Need.” This was an obvious reference to the ongoing war between his home country of Russia and Ukraine.
In case anyone didn’t know, Andrey Andreyevich Rublev is a Russian tennis professional. He was ranked world No. 5 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in September 2021. Rublev has won a total of 12 ATP Tour singles titles.
Rublev moved into the top 10 of the ATP Tour in October 2020. He has made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian, French, and US Opens, and he was on the Russian Davis Cup team that won in 2021.
